Epidemics
The Victorian era was marked by an onslaught of epidemics. These were not new afflictions however, urbanization created an environment ripe for widespread transmission. This, coupled with the birth of science as a serious profession, meant that the 19th century witnessed transformation in terms of the understanding of the spread of diseases and epidemics, and in the development of vaccinations.
