Walter Cronkite's Report in Vietnam

Subject

battlefield, war correspondent, Walter Cronkite, Vietnam War

Description

In this image, Walter Cronkite was reporting the Vietnam war for CBS News as he stood at a bombed-out area. As seen in the background, the buildings were severely destroyed. Cronkite himself also had to to wear protection clothes, such as a helmet, suggesting the danger at the scene.

After the Tet Offesive in 1968, Walter Cronkite visited Vietnam where he witnessed and made reports on the brutality of the war, a truth that had been kept away from the American people. His report was much speculative and personal, yet impactful to those who had blindly believed in the US government's narrative of the war. It confirmed people's doubt about what was going on in Vietnam at the time and further prompted the rise of antiwar movement to advocate for the withdrawal of US troops.
